Are there snakes in Corfu?

There are several species of snakes found in Corfu, Greece, but most of them are harmless to humans. The only venomous snake on the island is the European adder, also known as the common viper . The European adder is a small, shy snake that usually avoids human contact, but if threatened, it may bite in self-defense. The bigger snakes you see are not dangerous. Just keep out of their way and they will keep out of yours.

It’s important to note that snake bites in Corfu are extremely rare, and the risk of encountering a venomous snake is low, especially in tourist areas. If you’re hiking or exploring the island’s natural areas, it’s always a good idea to wear sturdy shoes and watch where you’re walking.

In case of a snake bite, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. Call 166 or better get someone to drive you to a medical health center because the ambulances are a bit slow… The bite of a European adder can be painful and may cause swelling and other symptoms, but with prompt treatment, most people make a full recovery. It’s also important not to panic or try to capture or kill the snake, as this can increase the risk of further bites or injuries.

Make sure you remember when you got bit and a description of the snake
