This means you pay the first 500 euros then the insurance kicks in.

1. Drive on the Right

  • In Greece, cars drive on the right side of the road, and overtaking is done on the left.

2. Speed Limits

  • Urban areas: 30 km/h (18 mph)
  • Suburban areas: 50 km/h  (31 mph)

There are only a couple of roads in Corfu where 80 km/h (50mph) is allowed. Nothing over

3. Seat Belts & Child Safety

  • Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
  • Children under 12 years old must sit in a child seat and cannot sit in the front.

4. Drinking & Driving

  • The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05% (or 0.02% for new drivers with less than two years of experience).
  • Police conduct random breathalyzer tests, and penalties are severe.

5. Mobile Phones

  • Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless you have a hands-free system.

6. Right of Way & Roundabouts

  • Unlike many other countries, vehicles entering a roundabout must yield to those already inside.
  • At intersections without signs, traffic from the right has priority.

7. Overtaking

  • Overtaking on solid white lines is forbidden.
  • On narrow roads, local drivers often pull over to let faster cars pass.

8. Parking

  • There are signs for no parking. If a bus can’t get by then parking is definitely not allowed.
  • In Corfu Town, parking can be tricky—use designated parking areas.

When driving in Corfu, watch out for:

  1. Narrow and Winding Roads – Many roads are steep, twisty, and lack guardrails, especially in mountain villages.
  2. Narrow 2 way roads – many roads in the villages are very narrow, but are still both ways.  If a car is coming the other way one person will have to back up. Typically, it is the person going up that backs up.
  3. Local Driving Style – Some drivers may drive aggressively or ignore stop signs and lane markings.
  4. Scooters and ATVs – These are common on the island, and riders may weave through traffic unexpectedly.
  5. Pedestrians and Animals – People often walk along roads with no sidewalks, and goats or stray dogs may cross suddenly.
  6. Limited Street Lighting – Some rural roads have poor lighting, making night driving more challenging.
  7. Poor Road Conditions – Watch out for potholes, uneven surfaces, and loose gravel, especially in less-traveled areas.
  8. Sharp Turns and Blind Corners – Use your horn in tight areas to alert other drivers, as visibility can be low.
  9. Parking Challenges – In busy tourist areas like Corfu Town, parking is limited, and streets can be congested.
  10. Unmarked Roads and Signage – Some roads lack proper signs, so using GPS or asking locals for directions may be necessary.

During the summer season it can get very busy in Corfu Town. Every year there are more and more cars on the streets. From the locals and the car rental companies renting out to tourists.  This means that in Corfu Town during certain times that traffic is insane and finding free parking is almost impossible.

When will you find easy free parking?

Before everything is open so 08:00

Then in the afternoon from 13:30-18:00

Then at night time after 23:00

If you are going into Corfu town and it is not during these times I recommend not wasting your time trying to find parking and going straight to a paid Parking.  Most likely, the one most convenient for you is the one in Liston

The only thing is sometimes it is full and is a long wait.  In which case, chose one of the others.

It’s hit or miss finding parking here in the summer. However, there is always a chance.

If you don’t mind the walk, You will usually find parking on the street here. It is in Garitsa and is a nice walk on the sea with the view of the Old fort as you go into Corfu Town.  However, if there is a storm out at sea the waves will hit the street and may hit the car. Salt ruins the car.

Paid Parking:

The safest parking, you don’t have to go directly into the city at all. It is right outside. It is also the cheapest around. Usually, 4 euros

Close to San Roko square, one of the more expensive ones. Usually, 5 euros .
